The Band was formed in 1902. After a few meetings, and gaining approval from the Canterbury Caledonian Society, the Band held its first practice on 8 September 1902.
Through two world wars, a depression and in more recent times a general change of emphasis of cultural priorities in our community “the Caley” Band has not only survived, but forced its way into Grade One and now maintains its place as one of the top competing Grade One Bands in New Zealand. In fact, for the 2007 and 2009 Contesting seasons the Band, through its consistent performances, took the Crown of New Zealand’s Champion of Champion Pipe Band. In 2010 the Band finished 3rd at the New Zealand Pipe Band Championships at Masterton.
In August 2010 the Band travels to Scotland to compete at the World Pipe Band Championships. While the Band has previously competed on a number of occasions in Australia, USA and Canada this is the first time it has travelled to the “holy grail” of pipe bands – Glasgow Green, Scotland.
